Fair Carbon - 1 year report

It’s now one year since the Gallifrey Foundation launched the Fair Carbon project,
at The Economist 8th Annual World Ocean Summit in March 2021.
As we take a huge step forward and register Fair Carbon as an independent organisation, we can also reflect on what we have achieved in this time:

In the last year, our small team has:
• Created the faircarbon.org website complete with back-end infrastructure to host open access training resources and blue carbon data sets
• Launched a blue carbon meta-registry, combining offsetting projects across registries with clear access to information on certification, ownership, and credit retail outlets
• Created a mangrove biodiversity prediction map as a resource for project developers & researchers – currently undergoing revision to improve UI & data accessibility.
• Begun work on modular guides to the accreditation process
• Identified subject matter experts across a range of geographies and ecosystems

Engaging with corporate partners:
• Worked closely with World Economic Forum / Friends of Ocean Action to set up a mangrove working group as an interface between scientists/restoration professionals and corporate investors
• Supporting the work of the emerging Blue Carbon Buyers Alliance & Blue Carbon Action Partnership to define high quality blue carbon credits and buyer/supplier principles – providing guidelines for an emerging market
• Learning through consultation with prospective offset purchasers what constitutes a "fair deal" for project investment models and what key information an investor needs to see from a project up front – closing that communication gap
